MA in Security and Strategic Studies

The MA program in Security and Strategic Studies which is interdisciplinary examines the complex framework of politics of security at local, regional and global to understand the actors, and processes that make/form security. More importantly, this program explores the conceptual, historical and policy issues surrounding security governance in Somaliland, the region, and Africa in the global context and how these manifest themselves in the wider context of contemporary warfare and international security. In a wider perspective and overview, security, governance, and development are inextricably linked, yet all too often both academics and policy-makers address them separately.

The MA Aims to:

  1. Develop a deeper understanding to many of the local, regional, and global issues that we face as citizens of an increasingly connected world and the different patterns and ideas that help explain how the international system affects world states’ relations and their respective citizens.

  2. Situate security complexity of the region within current socioeconomic challenges of migration, human security, violence and criminality, both regionally and globally.

  3. Enhance analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, to provide students with detailed practical knowledge of security, governance and development around the world and the African continent.
